Lula: Brazil is One of the Least Affected by the "Madness" of the War Against Iran
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva recently stated that Brazil is largely insulated from the economic fallout of the current conflict in the Middle East, referring to it as the "madness of the war waged against Iran."
The remarks were made during his speech at the opening ceremony of the Hannover Messe, the world’s largest industrial innovation and technology trade fair, held in Germany, where Brazil was featured as a partner country.
"We are not suffering from the surge in oil prices like many other countries are, because our government took preventative measures, and Brazil only exports 30% of its diesel oil," the President highlighted, reassuring the public about domestic economic stability amidst global volatility.
Sharp Criticism of the UN and the Conflict
During his address, Lula did not hold back in his criticism of the war being waged by the United States and Israel against Iran, aiming pointed remarks at the United Nations Security Council.
"While astronauts fly over the moon, bombings indiscriminately kill civilians, women, and children in the Middle East," Lula stated. He went on to condemn the international governance structures, adding that, "Some permanent members of the Security Council act without the backing of the UN charter."
The Brazilian leader also warned about the modern and devastating facets of the conflict, condemning the illegal use of Artificial Intelligence to select military targets.
The Global Economic Toll
Beyond the immediate geopolitical crisis, Lula outlined the severe economic ripple effects being felt worldwide—effects from which he says Brazil has managed to shield itself. He cited rising energy and transportation costs, agricultural shortages, and growing global food insecurity.
"It is the most vulnerable who pay the price of food inflation. Protectionism is resurging as a fallacious response to complex economic and social problems," he argued.
Strengthening Ties in Germany
During the diplomatic trip, President Lula held a series of high-level meetings in Hannover, including a bilateral meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Upon his arrival, he was welcomed with military honors at the Herrenhausen Palace.
Following the opening ceremony of the Hannover Messe, Lula wrapped up that leg of his agenda with a business dinner hosted by the German Chancellor. The event was attended by top executives from both Brazilian and German industries, signaling a continued push to strengthen commercial ties between the two nations.
